Exhibition Statement

Tarpey Gallery is proud to present ‘Colour and Form’, featuring work by Sue Firmin, Lesley Birch, Heather Duncan, Marianthi Lainas, Nick Hersey, Val Hudson, Laine Tomkinson and Catherine Headley.

The work by the artists in this group show, although diverse in its subject matter is unified by their love of colour. This exhibition looks to celebrate the tight-rope that these eight artists walk to achieve that elusive balance of Colour and Form and we hope you can join us in doing so too.

“When the colour achieves richness, the form attains its fullness also.” Paul Cezanne

Lesley Birch
Lesley makes paintings inspired by Nature & the Landscape. The work is filtered through her emotional response whilst out in nature.

Sue Firmin
Sue’s interest is in the process of creating, using the elements of form; Line, shape, texture, colour as a starting point for all of her recent paintings.

Marianthi Lainas
Having spent most of her life living a stone’s throw from the coast, Marianthi’s experimental cyanotype prints are informed by the dynamic places at the far edges of the land and the transience of the tidal islands, shifting sands and visiting migratory birds of the Dee Estuary.

Nick Hersey
Nick will be showing 3 pieces from his graffiti inspired and eye-poppingly colourful ‘Handstyle’ Series.

Heather Duncan
Heather takes inspiration from her everyday life, from landscape, music and poetry, and from memories. Each painting is drawn from a stream of consciousness, often starting in landscape but moving away from representation and becoming more abstract and expressive.

Val Hudson
Val’s paintings engage with the insubstantial, transient nature of existence as expressed through colour and form, the elements, open spaces and the play of light.

Catherine Headley
Catherine’s inspiration comes from visits to Penwith in Cornwall, a magical land encircled by seas. It is littered with the detritus of long ago, from Bronze Age cromlechs and Celtic crosses to the ruined engine houses of its abandoned tin mines.

Laine Tomkinson
Laine explores the emotional attributes of experience and sensation though colour, depth and form. Describing her practice as lyrical abstraction.
