Artist Statement

I work as a sculptor and printmaker with occasional forays into installation and photography.
In my sculptural work I focus on carving natural materials. I have a deep appreciation of the qualities of different types of wood and stone. The forms I make are modern and abstract but made using traditional tools. I enjoy the process of making something by hand and using skills which are becoming archaic.

I am inspired by the shapes of seeds, buds, fruit and other organic shapes.
I strive for simplified shapes which have a sense of harmony and stillness and accentuate the qualities of the material they’re made from.

I studied Visual Arts at Lancaster University, graduating in 1995.
I live and work in Nottingham and have a studio at Sneinton Market in the city’s Creative Quarter.

I have public sculptures permanently on show in Woodthorpe Park in Nottingham (Fern has been in situ since 2004 and is well on the way to being more habitat than artwork!) and at East Midlands Airport in Castle Donington (Dog-tooth Violet Seed was made for the airport’s Art Trail in collaboration with some local primary schools in 2006). I’ve had many other private commissions from people in the UK, Canada and New Zealand. I’m currently working on a large outdoor stone sculpture for a patron in America.
