Lois Wallace

About

Lois Wallace is a contemporary painter who trained at the Slade School of Art. She has exhibited in many countries including Berlin, Brussels, New York, Spain and the UK. Her work is in public and private collections in Europe, New Zealand and Miami and the UK. She lectured at Falmouth School of Art, Exeter School of Art and was Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Birmingham School of Art, Birmingham City University until 2017.

Known for her paintings on copper she is drawn to places that are inspired by the sublime, the epic and the overwhelming. Her work is concerned with depicting movement and stillness, presence and absence. The paintings are derived from photographs taken in the landscape. While there is a strong photographic element they are not depictions of the photographs; but evolve through the process of painting to create a narrative that is beautiful, but at the same time unsettling. Working in oil on unprimed copper, this lustrous support glows through the layers of paint to create light and atmosphere. The connection with the history of painting through the use of traditional techniques is important, and her narratives develop this with contemporary critique.
