Inverted Space – Demagogic Device
Expression of a spatial representation, multilayered view point of spaces that challenge the cultured attachments to the times we live in. The ‘Inverted Space – Demagogic Device’ series uses images from the past that had generated the sense of luxury, home and leisure as separate epochs. To turn these inside out, to invert and converge the spaces, I want to create an environment that is conflicting, challenging but aesthetically balanced.
Exploring these expressions of space, to challenge the social dynamic of our time, I have used the planes as metaphors for our over influential elements of the mass media, exploiting our fears, emotions and ignorance.
As statements to our cultured climate, I intended to highlight the present intensities by utilising images of yesteryear, this way we can explore better the interactions/emotions of the viewer, that have links to the past and the present, with an uncomfortable attachment to the future.
The Dystopian Family
As an artist I work with 35/120mm transparency film, using slides from the 1950’s onwards to make photomontages.
I started out using gunpowder to show an abstract depiction of ’Critical Mass’, a term I associate with a kind of ’collision’ or to ’collide’, as a social dynamic. This critical mass is something that I’ve worked with for some years now.
My new series of work entitled ‘The Dystopian Family’, works with the idea of Critical Mass, brings together the two worlds of work and the home to create a sense of balance and cohesion, yet the images are also uncomfortable, violent, intrusive and evoke a sense of emptiness. Here I have depicted a dystopian society that is built around the factory and home life, sliced into one another and seen as metaphors for how many of us live our lives. Resulting in a new meaning for the word ‘life’, one that is balanced between abstraction and reality.
I find using found or sourced photographic material rather rewarding, as it brings a great sense of nostalgic loss. This kind of loss, brings to me a kind of ‘rebirth’ in a way that rekindles the image. I photomontage these images to create a balanced division of worlds, my own representation of cultural exchanges and cohesion.
