Artist Statement

Nick Hedderly is a painter based in Nottingham. He studied at West Notts College in Mansfield in 1980 before graduating from Birmingham School of Art in 1984.

His early abstract work was based on the romantic ‘sublime’ landscape, and on images of flowers at night. From the late 1990’s his work was inspired primarily by the urban environments of Nottingham and London – often at night or in the early evening. More recent work has included other urban locations such as Derby and Dublin and also subject matter seen at different times of the day.

He has work in private collections in America, China, and the UK.

Galleries Magazine, October 2012
Over the last decade or so Nick Hedderly has become one of the most successful artists working in the East Midlands, winning open art ehibitions in Nottingham and Derby with his atmospherically charged and intensely painterly cityscapes and his solo show at the enterprising Tarpey Gallery in nearby Castle Donington makes it very clear is in no way undeserved. For these are quiet, thoughtful works, full of an understanding of the way buildings and cityscapes become, as he himself puts it, “a repository of so many of our feelings and memories.”
